Penn Battle III DX Spinning Reels are built tough to withstand whatever the saltwater angler puts these reels through. The Battle III DX reels are more powerful than the previous Battle III spinning reels. Brass main gears are in every size along with an improved HT-100 drag system. Transfer more power through the gears to your big catch on the other end of the line with oversized EVA handle knobs.
Instant anti-reverse
Aluminum reel spool
Full metal body and sideplate
CNC Gear Technology with brass main gear
HT-100 drag system with wave spring for linear adjustment
Feels sturdy, smooth, and the line lay is vastly improved over the Battle II.

After searching for the best price I finally settled with Tackle Direct. I really liked the new DX from PENN so i ordered one. First off the reel is big which is to be expected! The fit and finishes are great and appear to be built to withstand the elements. My reel was fair on action, I decided to take it apart and inspect the internals. It was basic inside and appeared well lubed. I wiped off all the grease and reapplied my favorite lubes. After many hours of watching tv and spinning it the action has loosened up. I think for the money this reel will do the job. It will be mated to a Tsunami Trophy Series jigging pole. The reason I gave it 4 stars was the action. After use if it smooths out and has no other problems I'll probably adjust it to a five star rating.
ProsNice finish and build quality.
ConsRough gear engagement or poor bearings, I really can't put a finger on it just yet. Hey bearings are cheap and if that smooths it out for 20-30$ this will be a great buy!

Absolutely stellar reel

I absolutely love this reel. Was looking for a light tackle workhorse to use now that it is wading season. Was going back and forth between this and the Spinfisher VI. Got to a store and got to feel this in my hands and it made the decision super easy. It isn't Shimano or Daiwa smooth, but I feel like I could winch up a monster on this 2500. It is a faster retrieve than my Pursuits and Fierce's. I have a couple Battle 2's, but don't have a ton of fishing on them like I do with the Fierce and Pursuit reels. It is water resistent so I don't have to worry too much about getting sprayed. I just give it a rinse when I get home at the end of the trip. Hoping to really put it to work in the coming months once my new waders get in.
ProsFast retrieve Love the silver/black color Light weight Durable feel
ConsNot the smoothest reel in the price point

You cant ask for a better bang for your buck. I have the 3000 and its a little heavier than expected but no big deal. Would recommend to anyone looking for a budget reel.

Great reel but....

As a lifelong Penn fan I was excited to get my new Penn Battle III DX5000, I?ve got it spooled up with 400 plus yards of 20lb braid and mounted on new Battalion II 12-20. Drag is smooth and frame light and strong. Not a fan of these new black handles Penn is using though, but not a big deal. One thing that troubles me is that the side bearing cover is made out of black plastic? These have long been made out of metal, it?s light and cheap and that part of the reel is prone to getting bumped on things, if that cracks and breaks there?s direct access to the side bearing. I?ll be packing reel with grease on not needing access very often but still. Penn should know that consumers would gladly pay an extra $1 to have superior components.
Is this reel smooth under pressure? My first penn reel was not and I was wondering if all penn reels were like that.

This is a very solid well designed reel, while i have not personally fished it so i cannot say with absolute certainty, i would assume that this reel is very smooth under pressure with the brass gears and full metal construction.
What was your previous Penn reel you were having issues with?
What is the difference in the DX models over the regular Battle III model?
1 Answer
The biggest difference is that Brass main gears are in every size of the Penn Battle III DX as opposed to the Battle III which only has the brass gearing in the 6k-10k models. The stronger gearing makes for a more robust and powerful reel.
